Cat Communication Through Eye Contact

Eye contact is a powerful form of communication with cats. Though their approach may be more subtle than us humans, it is clear to see when a cat is uncomfortable or threatened it may avoid eye contact completely, while if a cat makes eye contact with you, especially in a relaxed environment, it can signal that they feel comfortable, trusting and even affectionate towards you. Just think of those moments when you are working away at your computer and your sweet little kitty comes plopping their butt right in front of your monitor and stares at you adoringly, seemingly saying, “It’s ME-Time Momma!”
The Slow Blink: A Sign of Affection
One of the easiest ways to build a bond with your cat is by reciprocating the cat’s slow blink. But what does this look like? When a cat does this, it typically begins with a series of slow half-blinks, followed by a prolonged narrowing of the eye. Sometimes even closing the eye completely.
Practicing The Slow Blink
Building a more trusting and understanding relationship with your cat is simple if you follow these easy steps:
Present with relaxed body posture - lower is always better. I typically lay my head on the furniture in front of me or even lay on the ground and let the cat approach me first. Appear relaxed, not stiff.
Have a neutral facial expression - nothing tense here. Your face should be completely relaxed.
Make brief eye contact - gaze at your cat for only a few seconds at a time
Slowly blink - almost pretending you are sleepy, slowly close your eyes and reopen them again just as slowly
Look for their response - if they reciprocate this behavior, you have succeeded in making a positive connection!
What To Avoid
Of course, this communication will take practice and will take more time with cat’s that are less trusting, but there are definitely a few things that you should avoid during this process.
-Avoid prolonged eye contact
-Don't ever force eye contact
-Be mindful of the cat’s comfort level at all times
In Conclusion
Connecting with your cat through slow blinking is a subtle, yet powerful way to create a deeper, more trusting relationship with your cat. So the next time you are cuddling on the couch together, take a quiet moment to gaze over into those big, beautiful eyes and give the slow blink a try. Your cat will appreciate you for it.
Wishing you all the warm, cuddly cat feels!
